Phillip Stutts

Host of one of the biggest marketing podcasts in the world, The Marketing Book Podcast, Douglas Burdett joins Phillip this week to share some of the top lessons he has learned after reading 330+ marketing books and interviewing the masterminds behind them.

The duo starts strong with the #1 insight Douglas has gathered from all of the guests on his show – marketers that have the ability to empathize with the consumer will win. Always. Douglas then dives into an example using one of the most successful companies in the world right now, Amazon.

The pair then highlight one of Douglas’ top recommendations for marketing books that acted more as a support group for marketers, rather than a book. He recalls the final chapter that mentions purpose-driven marketing. *Take note – you DO NOT have to have a “purpose” to be successful at marketing. Instead, focus on what is real about your product and service, and stay authentic.

Finally, Phillip asks his favorite question – what failures in the marketing world have you learned from recently? Douglas warns listeners against “check-the-box marketing” as well as his own error in preparing marketing assets without assuring alignment with the sales and business development of the client.

Stick around at the end for Phillip’s MARKETING TIP OF THE WEEK that expands on last episode’s tip and pushes marketers to take advantage of the lifetime value of their customers. Douglas chimes in with his own tip of utilizing the “5 rings of insight” for a unique way to gather data on consumers.
